SIU Track and Field signs pole vaulter Miracle Thompson

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois track and field has signed pole vaulter Miracle Thompson, head coach Connie Price-Smith and her staff announced Wednesday.

Thompson, a Terre Haute, Ind. native, recently won the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference pole vault title for Terre Haute North High School. In addition, she is a three-time state qualifier in the pole vault, earning high school All-American honors as a senior. As junior she also qualified for state in the 100-meter hurdles.

"Miracle will add a great amount of talent to the Saluki pole vault squad and will be very competitive right away in the Missouri Valley Conference," pole vault coach Dan Digman said. "She is the most talented female vaulter to ever sign with the Salukis and will push her teammates to be better. I am looking forward to adding Miracle to our squad."

The incoming freshman has jumped has high as 11-09.75 already exceeding the SIU school record. She plans to major in recreation.

South Rowan's Makenzie Mullinax, an all-Observer pole vaulter, signed with Charlotte. She has a best vault of 11 feet, 6 inches and considered offers from East Tennessee State and East Carolina.

Smith signs with Redlands

Smith will receive an academic scholarship from the Division III school.

Hoquiam High School senior Mackenzie Smith, who will earn 12 varsity letters for the Grizzlies, has signed a letter of intent to compete in track at the University of Redlands in Southern California.

The 17-year-old Smith, an honor student, will receive an academic scholarship. As an NCAA Division III school, Redlands does not offer full athletic scholarships.

Smith said Redlands offered the best combination of academic and athletic facilities of the schools she considered. The Southern California climate didn’t hurt, either.

Seven McGill athletes sign

McGill-Toolen Catholic had a banner day as seven athletes signed national letters of intent with various colleges Wednesday afternoon.

Track and field athletes Angela McCord and Stephen Calogrides; volleyball player Sarah Scott; baseball players Drew Leachman, Ryan Cummings, and Jeffrey Lyons; as well as soccer player Patrick Hall signed scholarships in ceremonies held in the school library.

McCord and Calogrides both signed with the University of South Alabama; Scott and Leachman signed with Birmingham Southern University; Cummings with Southeastern Louisiana; Lyons with Alabama Southern Community College; and Hall with Spring Hill.

McCord, one of McGill-Toolen's best all-around track and field athletes in history, came off extensive knee surgery to win the 6A indoor shot put, as well as making all-state honors in the shot, discus, javelin and pole vault outdoors. At the state outdoor championships, she broke her own record in the javelin with a throw of 130 feet even. McCord scored a 32 on her ACT and was also offered an academic scholarship to USA.

The collegiate ranks took notice. Next fall, [Molly] Clancy will enroll at California Lutheran College in Thousand Oaks on an academic scholarship. Because the school is Division III, it can’t offer athletic scholarships. Still, Clancy will join the school’s track and field squad, where Truitt believes she can make an immediate impact on the D-III level.

• Lauren Pew of Mesa Mountain View High School, who was fifth at the 5A Division I state championships last week with a mark of 10 feet, 9 inches, will pole vault for Mesa Community College next year.

Jami Michaud, also from Mountain View, will be competing for Paradise Valley Community College. She placed second at the state meet at 12-0 1/2. Mountain View’s Kelly Taylor, who placed 10th in the state boys meet, will also be going to Paradise Valley CC.

One family, 2 graduations, 556 miles

Chandler High senior Hatton Updike is following in his brother's footsteps, but it's causing somewhat of a tricky logistical situation for his family.

The 18-year-old's Chandler graduation is on the same day as his older brother's graduation ceremony 556 miles away at the U.S. Air Force Academy. Hatton and older brother Trenton, 22, graduate May 30. And Hatton will be leaving for the Air Force Academy shortly after he leaves Chandler High. To attend both ceremonies, the Updike family will be in Colorado for Trenton's morning graduation, then everyone will fly back to Arizona for the 8 p.m. Chandler High ceremonies.

While there's no financial cost to attend the military academy, Hatton, who is an A student with advanced courses, will receive training and education valued at some $300,000. He'll compete in pole vaulting there.
