Minnesota:

There is a link on this page: http://www.mshsl.org/mshsl/activitypage.asp?actnum=429

That takes you to this:

[quote]November 15, 2005

Dear Parent,

On February 23, 2002, my son Kevin Dare, a sophomore at the Pennsylvania State University , was competing in the Big Ten men’s Indoor Track and Field Championships in the University of Minnesota Field House . Just before his vault, Kevin turned to me and said, “This is my day, Dad.â€Â

More Minnesota:

http://www.mshsl.org/mshsl/offjudge/200 ... Manual.pdf

C. Participants must wear helmets during practice, warm-ups and competition in the pole vault.

That is the actual rule for 2006-2007. As of right now it does not specify what kind of helmet must be used.

South Dakota: I could not find anything on their site indicating they required helmets. Does anyone know if they still do?

[quote]( 1 ) Pole vaulters are required to wear a properly fitted helmet. The helmet should be “round and smooth and able

possible helmet styles would include skateboard helmets, lacrosse
helmets, hockey helmets, or bike helmets which meet the ASTM, NOCSAE or CPSC standard.

Can I have a piece of the lawsuit that results in someone killing themselves while vaulting in a bike helmet?

seems like you could get stabbed in the back from that bike helmet. but yea, it is crazy to require helmets. yes it is a tradegy that he was killed, but what is better.. broken neck, paralized/crippled for the rest of your life, or no life at all. thats for you to decide.

And it's not up to some school committee, usually made up of lay people, to decide.

Mandating helmets puts people who land in the pit (the vast majority by several orders of magnitude) at risk, especially the under and over rotators. No one is saying you can't wear one.

In Minnesota...

Had the men's big ten meet been somewhere else in 2002 the schools in that five state area probably wouldn't be wearing helmets. That is my opinion.

As for why Minnesota wears helmets when you have the meet staffed by coaches on the advisory board, the powers that be made a decision that they felt would keep kids safe. The amazing thing about helmets is that well before this happened we had prominent national coaches requiring kids to wear helmets at their camps. I remember one camp that they had a box of protek helmets and a kid that didn't bring there own had to purchase one.

So we wear helmets. As a lowly coach in this great state what am I to do? Tell my kids not to wear helmets because our legislative body is wrong? Have them wear helmets because our legislative body says we do?
