I was really impressed by the idea of a 7th grade girl jumping 11-3, but I did a google search, and it turns out she's really a senior.

Broncos' Mattoon thrives in spotlight at Arcadia
By: TOM SHANAHAN - For the North County Times
ARCADIA ---- The pole vault is one of those track and field events contested off to the side, with the announcer directing the crowd's attention to the runway when necessary.
But for the 38th annual Arcadia Invitational, the nation's premier high school track invitational, Rancho Bernardo High senior vaulter Kate Mattoon suddenly found herself taking center stage. Meet officials constructed a special runway in the middle of the Arcadia High football field to highlight the strong fields in both the boys and girls pole vault competitions.
By the end of the girls pole vault, Mattoon was the last girl standing with a winning height of 12 feet, 3 inches. The Notre Dame-bound Mattoon outlasted a field that included the national leader, Allison Stokke of Newport Harbor.
Stokke has a best of 13-5 1/4 this year, but the pole vault is one of track's least predictable events. Stokke failed to clear her opening height of 11-9, while Mattoon's consistency carried her through to the first-place finish.
"You never know what's going to happen in the pole vault," said Mattoon, who has a season best of 12-4 that ranks No. 3 all-time in the San Diego Section.
Mattoon missed three attempts at 12-6. On her third try, she was over the bar but nicked it on the way down.
"I think it's just a matter of putting everything together," said the defending CIF champion. "I have all the parts now. I just have to make sure I have everything going at the right time."
Mattoon competed into a headwind, but the boys pole vaulters also contended with a drop in the temperature later in the evening. El Camino's Derek Scott was fourth at 15-9.

FYI:
The girls vault started with a nice lil tail/cross. At 11-3, one of my girls (Pena) got on the runway, and the wind spun. It was, no joke, a 40mph headwind.
The headwind stayed most of the day, but not NEARLY as bad. I'd say 5-15mph, maybe a lil more for the most part. Enough to get into your head. Hence the low heights on both sides of the vault.
About 4 girls had a BUNCH of height on 12-3 on third attempts, but Kate was the only one to leave the bar up. She jumped great.

Locals shine in Arcadia: RB's Mattoon wins vault

ARCADIA – Pole vaulters are attention-grabbing daredevils, especially this season where statewide five boys are over 16 feet, paced by national leader Derek Scott.
Only it wasn't Scott or any of his friends who stole the limelight at last night's 38th Arcadia Invitational track meet.
Instead, it was Rancho Bernardo's Kate Mattoon, surprise gold medalist in the girls pole vault with a clearance of 12 feet, 3 inches and a very close miss at 12-6.
On a night when eight section bests were recorded in the nation's premier high school meet, Mattoon kept alive the Rancho Bernardo mystique.
Of the top seven girl vaulters in section history, six wore RB on their singlets and although Mattoon has gone higher than her winning mark, soaring 12-4 in a dual meet two weeks ago, her near-miss on her final try at 12-6 bodes well for the future.
"This was very unexpected," said Mattoon, a Notre Dame-bound senior. "I was hoping for a PR (personal record), but I thought something like 12-3 or 12-9 might win it."
Mattoon, like national leader Alison Stokke of Newport Beach's Newport Harbor High, almost exited at an embarrassingly low height.
Mattoon failed at 11-3 on her first two attempts, jumped onto a larger pole, clearing it on her third and final attempt. Stokke came in at 11-9 and exited without clearing a height.
Once on her way, Mattoon left everyone on the ground at 12-3 and asked the bar to be placed at 12-6.
Her first two tries were bad misses. On the third attempt, she got her legs over but brushed the bar on the way down. The crossbar actually bounced on the pegs and for an instant almost stayed up before following Mattoon into the pit.
Just that close.
"I almost cleared 12-6 on Thursday," said the 5-foot-4½ former gymnast. "It's just a matter of putting it together. I have the parts."
As for the boys vaulters, a cold crosswind prevented any of the 16-footers from approaching their bests
