I have just received this email from my friend Brian Roe - who among other things has worked for the IAAF in organising the World Championships in Osaka and the Olympic games in Sydney. I trust this will put this issue firmly to rest - after some appropriate apologies of course.

Dear Al,

I have liaised with Denis Wilson who was the Oceania member of the IAAF
Technical Committee at the times of the changes to the pole vaults rules to:

(a) reduce the length of the pegs; and

(b) provide for only one flat side for the bar ends.


He is emphatic that Bubka played no role whatsoever in the move to have
these rules introduced and that the genesis of both rule changes was
entirely from amongst members of the Technical Committee, inlcuidng Denis himself.

After a near exhaustive search of my parent's house, I was unable to locate the video of Gautaullin's attempts at 6.08 during the 1990 Goodwill games. Looks like the search continues for other recordings of 20 foot (or very close) attemps. If I ever find it, I'll try and post it. Until then, sorry for the tease.

Actually Lojo has video of him clearing 6.15 bar and he definitely had the potential to jump 20ft in competition! He also took jumps at 20ft 6'' in 96' when he broke the american record!

I believe after jumping 5.97 Lojo jacked it up to 21' for whatever reason. Maybe to prove the 6.40 model correct? Without seeing any video, I'll hazard a guess and say none were close.

Markov attempted either 6.15 or 6.16 after clearing 6.00 for the first time in New Zealand.

If I remember correctly, Mack may have attempted a WR after clearing 6.01 in Monte Carlo. Not sure on that though.

Other than that, I don't know of anyone attempting a 20'+ bar.

Just got an email response from Lawrence Johnson concerning the 6.40 attempt.

"Yes, after my first AR I had the bar raised to 6.40. However after '99 I would push the bar to either 6 meters or 6.16."

It is interesting that this is being brought up, Bubka is definetly the iaaf's boy. The difference was is he had a completely different set of rules than pole vaulters do now. So, when and if it the record is broken congrats to that man for overcoming the "incredible rules committee". This sport was and is hard enough before these people get involved. On a side note congrats to Brad for breaking the record!!!

So Long peg record at Bubka's and short peg at Walkers? Seperate the records like they did with the Javelin. No problem to do that.

He could have had the short pegs and rounded top bar and still made it. The facts still state Bubka is the best and will always be the best until someone jumps 6.16. Just my view of this.

I agree. Its not like he advocates that they throw knives at you down the runway nowadays. Its still a pole, a box, a bar. If anything, we keep producing faster tracks, smoother poles, and more defined science to the sport, we have MORE advantage now than he did.
