What do you think would have the most impact on your vault for training in the off-season?

I feel this is an ambiguous question becuase if you have a poor speed then work on that, if you are good with your vault but not strong then lifting is what you should be doing.... So it depends from person to person....

The best thing you can do in the off season for most high school kids is pole vault.

However, this is not an option for the majority of you.

The next best thing that I think high schoolers can do in the fall and winter is get involved in a school sport.

The number one thing is to have fun!

The number two thing is to become a better athlete. You will get a better workout in most places playing football/volleyball/soccer/cross country than you will trying to train on your own.

Have fun! Be active! Stay healthy!

My 2 cents.

Hacky sack, TV and the bar.

only kidding, but really--

Other sports I think are huge--esp at the novice level. Learning how to compete is an important attribute. Knowing how to lay it out and win when it matters is an important piece of the puzzle.

But once you get a little more developed (i.e. the college level), I would say to train the weak points. Get better specifically at the things that are holding you back--thus, you will improve

Coach Hannay from Slippery Rock strongly suggested this to us during off season / indoor season without PV facilities.

The skill of sprinting gets better with repetition.

The skill of jumping off the ground gets better with repetition.

practice, practice, practice.

The point of an off-season to not only to refresh your body but your mind. If the only way you can get your entire life away from pole vaulting is to JUST lift... then JUST lift. But if you can do pole runs and do rings, while still becoming refreshed from your past season, do it. You want an off-season to bring you back into the season confident, strong, and ready to go much higher than when you left.
The greater the challenge, the more glorious the triumph

I think that the best thing to do in the off-season is something different from what you normally do. Make sure that it's fun, safe, and productive towards your training. Here are some specifics:

-get lots of rest (a lot of us-including myself-forget about that)
-volleyball with your friends
-riding a bike
-surfing

Some things to avoid in large quantities would be:

-marathons
-swimming
-cliff diving into shallow water
-pole vaulting over clotheslines, trashcans, your friends, etc.

These activities can be counter-productive to training and dangerous. (I'll let you figure out which one is which.) ;)
