IU True Freshman Vera Neuenswander Has Record Jump

Unread postby jcoover » Sun Feb 25, 2007 8:51 pm

CHAMPAIGN, Ill.- Freshman Vera Neuenswander broke the Big Ten record in the pole vault with a second-place finish on the first day of the Big Ten Indoor Championships, hosted by Illinois, on Saturday, Feb. 24. Indiana is 7th in the team standings after the first day with 18 points.

Neuenswander cleared 4.11 meters in the pole vault, besting the previous Big Ten record of 4.00-meters, done by Ebbie Metzinger of Purdue in 2002. She also bested the school record of 3.91 meters, which was held by Emily Tharp (2002). Her jump ranks just outside the top 10 in the country in the event, and is an NCAA provisional qualifying mark.

Mallory Peck of Purdue also cleared 4.11 meters in the competition, but Peck earned the first-place points due to number of times attempted.

"Vera just stepped up and competed and did well," assistant coach Jake Wiseman said. "It was awesome, that was one of the best pole vault competitions that I've ever watched. I knew that one day soon it would all come together for her, and today it did."
