Herb Named Empire 8 Athlete of the Week
Joe Venniro - Associate SID
2/5/2007

ROCHESTER, NY - Senior Mike Herb (Malden-on-Hudson, NY/Saugerties) of the RIT men's indoor track and field squad, was named the Empire 8 men's indoor track and field athlete of the week on Monday for the week ending February 4, 2007.

Herb won the pole vault on Friday at the RIT Invitational with a vault of 4.67 meters, breaking his own school record for the fourth time in the last three years. The leap was also a NCAA provisional qualifying score as well.

The Tigers are back in action on Saturday, as they travel to compete in the Cornell Invitational. Events begin at 11 a.m.

ASU's Sarafian Honored As Sun Belt Field Performer Of The Week

Release: 02/06/2007

Sarafian is this week's Sun Belt Field Performer of Week

NEW ORLEANS, La. (2/6/07) - Arkansas State pole vaulter Adam Sarafian (pronounced suh-RAFE-ee-uhn) is this week's Sun Belt Conference Field Performer of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday afternoon.
Sarafian, who transferred to ASU from the University of Georgia, won the pole vault competition at last weekend's Indiana Relays in Bloomington, Ind., with a height of 17-3 1/4. That vault meets the provisional qualifying standard for the NCAA Indoor Championships in March.

The junior from Ocean Township, N.J., has already negotiated a height of 17-6 1/2 this indoor season at the Reno (Nev.) Summit; however, that result doesn't count toward qualification because it was accomplished at a meet which features only one event.

Sarafian is ASU's third provisional qualifier. Previously, James Jenkins jumped 50-8 in the triple jump and Amy Fleddermann has provisionally qualified for the women's pentathlon.

He is also the fourth ASU student-athlete to win the SBC performer award. Previously, Jenkins, Fleddermann, and sprinter Jason Brooks were honored.

Andre Poljanec won the pole vault at 17 feet, 8 inches and narrowly missed at 18-2, which would have been the best jump in the country.

In the pole vault, an under-the-weather Nick Mossberg surprised himself, tying his season best with a 5.20m vault for a third-place finish.

"I had a bad cold and cough all week. I felt real weak," said Mossberg, a junior. "I had to compete though. I can always feel sick later."

He provisionally qualified for the Indoor Championships, missing his personal record by 0.01m.

College Update
Friday, February 02, 2007
STAR OF THE WEEK

Mark Langlois, Michigan State -- Langlois keeps going higher and higher in the pole vault. Langlois, a senior from Fruitport, won his third consecutive meet last weekend, soaring to a personal best of 16-83/4 to win the Notre Dame Invitational. That victory comes after his first place at the Red Simmons Invitational at Michigan (16-63/4) and Central Michigan's Chippewa Open (16-0) earlier in January. Langlois, who was also a star running back at Fruitport who helped coach the Trojans last fall, was a second-team all-Big Ten selection in last year's outdoor season and has established himself as the best vaulter in the conference in the current indoor season.
