Johnson signs to play at OIT

Baker graduate Micah Johnson has signed a letter of intent to pole vault for Oregon Institute of Technology in Klamath Falls next spring.

Johnson pole vaulted, wrestled and played football for the Bulldogs before graduating this past spring.

Johnson did not place in the pole vault at last year's district meet. He did advance to the Class 4A state meet as a member of Baker's district-champion relay team.

Johnson is the son of Dave and Cathy Johnson of Baker City.

Hauswirth scholarship bound

Chris Hauswirth has accepted a track scholarship to Chico State, where he will compete in the pole vault and decathlon.

Last year Hauswirth qualified for the Junior College State finals in the decathlon at Hartnell College, finishing second overall â€â€

OXFORD, Ohio - Adding four student-athletes for the 2007-08 season, the Miami University men's track and field team and 14th-year head coach Warren Mandrell announced the signing four Ohio prep athletes to National Letters of Intent. The signing of Heath Gibson (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West), Dan Hull (Warren, Ohio/John F. Kennedy), Josh Rees (Marysville, Ohio/Marysville) and Matt Rudin (Middleburg Heights, Ohio/Midpark) brings the number of Miami track and field signees to 11.

"We're pretty excited about our signing class," Mandrell said. "All 11 of our signees were on the podium as a scorer at their state meets, and these four athletes in particular have a chance to make an impact as freshman. Gibson and Hull are both versatile sprinters who also can contribute in the relay events, and Rees and Rudin both hit marks at their state meets that would have scored at the MAC Championships."

The final field signee announced by Mandrell is Rudin, a pole vaulter who won a district championship with a district-record and personal-best clearance of 15-1 1/4. A two-time state qualifier, the Midpark High School standout, placed sixth at the Division I Ohio State Championships as a junior and senior. Rudin cleared 14-8 at the state meet as a senior and also vaulted 14-6 as a junior.

"Rudin, along with Rees, is an athlete with the potential to be a MAC scorer as a freshman," said Mandrell. "His pole vault at the state meet would have scored at the MAC Championships, and his signing gives us another quality pole vaulter."

Matt Rudin: Pole vaulter ... Ohio prep athlete from Midpark High School ... won district championship as a senior and set new district record with a clearance of 15-1 1/4 ... placed sixth in the pole vault at both the 2006 and 2007 Ohio Division I state meet ... cleared 14-8 at the state meet as a senior ... cleared 14-6 at the state meet as a junior.

UNCW ANNOUNCES INCOMING TRACK AND FIELD CLASS

WILMINGTON, N.C. - Fresh off UNC Wilmington's eighth Colonial Athletic Association men's track and field title, Head Coach Jim Sprecher has announced the signings of 20 athletes for the 2007-08 men and women's indoor and outdoor seasons.

"The women's class is one of the biggest, numbers and talent-wise, that we've ever signed", said Sprecher. "The men's class, while not big in numbers, could be able to contribute immediately."

The Class of 2011 also features a pair of highly touted Pole Vaulters. Annie Powell finished second at the Virginia AAA Indoor State Championships and earned All-America honors. Michelle Quirk finished third at the New York State Class A Championships.

OC track announces signing of new recruits

Oklahoma Christian University head track and field coach Randy Heath recently announced the signing of eight men and eight women to join the Eagle and Lady Eagle track and field programs in 2007.

LIONS ADD NINE TO 2007-08 SQUAD

HAMMOND - Southeastern Louisiana University track and field coach Sean Brady announced the signing of 15 athletes - including the nephew of former head coach and current Southeastern Hall of Fame member Andy Thiel - for the 2007-08 campaign.

Southeastern, which posted its best-ever finish at the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships this spring with a third-place showing, added nine men and six women to the 2007-08 roster.

Signing on the men's side were sprinters Jacob Hadley (Metairie, La.), Jordan Redd (Opelousas, La.), Jerel Butler (New Orleans, La.), Shannon Grover (Reserve, La.) and Alex Collins (Rosenberg, Texas), pole vaulters Matthew Thiel (Covington, La.) and Stephen Durel (Baton Rouge, La.), triple jumper Michael Rheams (Walker, La.) and junior college thrower Kyle Francis (British Virgin Islands).

Inking with the Lady Lions were sprinters Jelessa Jett (New Orleans, La.), Josalynn Burns (Geismar, La.) and Darielle Sanders (LaPlace, La.), and distance runners Everlyne Montonyei (Eldoret, Kenya) and Dorcus Kipkiai (Eldoret, Kenya). The Lady Lions also added distance runner Ernestine Carodine (Philadelphia, Pa.), who transferred from Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

"This recruiting class projects to be a very strong group for us," Brady said. "The addition of some mature junior college and quality high school athletes should really help strengthen our men's and women's sprint hurdle and women's distance groups.

"Additionally, this group is probably the best group of students we have recruited. Their overall GPA's and test scores are quite impressive. I believe the men we have added will put us in contention for the Southland Conference outdoor title in 2008 and the distance runners we added on the women's side should move us up numerous spots in cross country.

Thiel, a St. Paul's standout and son of former Lion trackster Terry Thiel, cleared a personal-best 14-6 last spring and was an All-Academic, All-Metro and All-District selection. Durel, who finished third in the pole vault at the state indoor and outdoor meets, was a two-time district champion and was the 2007 regional champion at Catholic High School.
